Reds @ Dodgers July 27, 2013: Arroyo vs Ryu

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150For the first time in a long while, I’ve gone off on a trip and returned to find out that the Dodgers didn’t make some sort of move. Oh, sure, they DFA’d Ted Lilly, which was more than welcome, but he’s barely been on the team all season as it is anyway. With the trading deadline just days away, I thought for sure I’d come back home needing to figure out a way to rationalize Michael Young, Dodger third baseman.

That may yet happen, but so far, so good. In fact, the biggest move is one that the Dodgers didn’t make. Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez signed with the Phillies for a reported 6/$48m deal, with bonuses and options that could push it to nearly $60m. Since then, we’ve been hearing shock at the deal, with some expressing concern that Gonzalez might be a long reliever or have issues with his elbow. We don’t know, and we won’t until we get a look at him in the bigs, but I have to say: bottomless wallets or not, I’m not all that disappointed that the Dodgers didn’t come out on top here. Now as far as shortstop Alexander Guerrero… no, still no news that.

Back to tonight’s game, you’ll notice that Skip Schumaker is hitting leadoff and playing left field, and it’s not just a simple day off for Carl Crawford — Crawford was apparently so ill today that he had to be taken to the emergency room, reports Dylan Hernandez, though Don Mattingly termed it “precautionary”.

Hyun-jin Ryu starts tonight against Bronson Arroyo, with Chris Capuano to follow tomorrow in the finale of the Cincinnati series. The Dodgers are then off on Monday, which Mattingly will use as an opportunity to line up his rotation for two-game Yankees set that begins in Los Angeles on Tuesday. (Yes, that’s right. After flying from Toronto to Los Angeles without an off day or even the benefit of an early start in Canada on getaway day, they get a rare day off in the middle of a homestand. And for the second time this year, a marquee matchup with the Yankees is a mid-week two-game series. Nicely done, MLB schedule.)

Clayton Kershaw & Zack Greinke will start against the Yankees, putting Ricky Nolasco in line to kick off a series in Chicago against the Cubs on Thursday, August 1. How will it line up after that, with Stephen Fife likely ready to return by then? Well, let’s get past the trading deadline and see how Cliff Lee fits in first, shall we?

want giants to win so that they trade for Marlin Byrd.

"Growing up here in Redondo Beach and LA and going to games at Dodger Stadium, and um, actually hitting a home run here is surreal for me, so it's a memory I'll never forget."

....

"I'd dream about it as a kid -- hitting a home run at Dodger Stadium -- so it doesn't get any better than that."

Great night for those Korean fans, but why is the shirt they're waving with #99 on it red?

Great win against a solid team. This was a big win to show that this team is absolutely for real against some of the best in the NL.

I'm still waiting to see how the Gnats managed to fail to score with bases loaded and none out

So Ryu was incredible tonight (so much for those naysayers, ha). Skippy crushed a ball to center and doubled (so much or those naysayers, ha). Go Blue.
