Yankees @ Dodgers July 31, 2013: Welcome Back, Hiroki

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150Newest Dodger Drew Butera is actually the newest Isotope, having been added to the 40-man roster optioned to Albuquerque. When he arrives there, I imagine Damaso Espino will be on the move. I also imagine that not a single one of you cares, so let’s move on.

Scott Van Slyke is back in the fold, with Elian Herrera optioned back to Albuquerque. Herrera had one mere pinch-hitting appearance in his ten days up, and the timing of this makes it clear how awkward that entire “activate Ted Lilly for one day” business was.

Van Slyke had been sent down on July 21, ten days ago, to make room for Matt Kemp. Kemp of course then proceeded to injure himself immediately, but rather than bring back Van Slyke earlier than the ten-day minimum — which would have been allowable since Kemp was going to the disabled list — they activated Lilly in Toronto. Lilly was DFA’d the next day, but since that wasn’t an injury, at that point they couldn’t bring back Van Slyke, and brought up Herrera instead. Now they switch places, and while it clearly didn’t make that much of a difference, it’s interesting to see how that entire Lilly saga affected the bottom of the roster.

For the Yankees, Hiroki Kuroda will return to Dodger Stadium for the first time since leaving the club following the 2011 season, and I imagine he’s going to get himself a nice reception from Dodger fans. Actually, with CC Sabathia struggling, Kuroda has taken over the role of staff ace with the Yanks, pitching to a 2.51 ERA and a 3.50 FIP. With Clayton Kershaw opposing him — and a Yankees lineup that not only has Vernon Wells in right field, but “on his fifth team in two seasons” Brent Lillibridge at first base — we might be in for yet another low-scoring affair tonight.

When Kershaw gets to the mound, he’ll first see Brett Gardner, and that’s relevant since Kershaw hit Gardner so hard in 2010 that it eventually required surgery.

Am I the only one who thinks we got robbed by that "no swing" call that ended up unleashing hell?

There are three sure things in life: death, taxes, and Rivera.

Ah well, split the series. That's baseball.

Does it hurt more to lose games like this or to get blown out?

They should play New York New York for all the Yankee fans there

It's ok guys, playing .800 baseball means you lose a game every 5 games or so.

PAUL QUANTRILL'S ERROR DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE THE DODGERS DIDN'T SCORE EVEN 1 RUN.

I can tell you this we aint gonna win every night like we have been. even the best club of all time didnt come close to it. we are only 3 games off pace for 90 wins and the way they been playin this month 100 wins is no longer a pipe dream. It's a serious possibility.
