Dodgers @ Cubs August 2, 2013: Ryu on the Road

wrigleyfield

Hyun-jin Ryu starts for the Dodgers today in Wrigley Field, and that should be interesting because for as effective as Ryu has been this year, he’s had himself a much tougher time of it away from Los Angeles.

In ten starts at home, Ryu has pitched 68.2 innings with a 1.83 ERA and a .620 OPS against, along with a very good 58/18 K/BB.

In ten starts on the road, he’s gone 60.1 innings with a 4.62 ERA and a .715 OPS against, to go with an okay 47/24 K/BB.

We’ve spoken a few times about how Ryu seemed to be going through a tougher stretch as June turned into July, but what we didn’t really talk about at the time was that Ryu was on the road July 5 in San Francisco, July 10 in Arizona, and July 22 in Toronto. The Dodgers won all three of those games, though that’s because the Dodgers basically win every game at this point; Ryu was never really that great. Then of course, last Saturday, he gets to go back home against the Reds and he was simply outstanding. Ryu has allowed three or more earned runs seven times this year, and six have come on the road, excepting only June 12 against the Diamondbacks.

So which Ryu will we see today? Unfortunately for him, after all my talk about how great Hanley Ramirez is this morning, he’s not even in today’s lineup. Neither is Carl Crawford, so not only does Scott Van Slyke get another start (this time in left), Mark Ellis slides to the top to lead off. With Nick Punto spelling Ramirez at shortstop and hitting second, there’s just no shortage of #grit for Adrian Gonzalez and today’s temporary cleanup hitter, Yasiel Puig.

What’s fun, however, is that while the Dodgers are in Wrigley, the Diamondbacks are heading off to Fenway Park to begin a series against the suddenly hot Red Sox, who just walked off in spectacular fashion for the second night in a row against Seattle. I know it’s tough for most of you to want to root for the Red Sox, but I feel like an exception can be made in this case. Jake Peavy will also make his Boston debut tomorrow, so we can see if that otherwise unrelated deadline deal can help the Dodgers regardless.

Taking on Marmol and Wilson is just another example of our team's new motto: "Scared money don't make money bitches."
