Dodgers @ Cubs August 3, 2013: No Adrian

wrigleyfieldI really can’t repeat this mind-blowing stat from Jon Weisman of Dodger Thoughts enough:

If the #Dodgers win Saturday, they’ll have gone 30-42 and then 30-7.

That is just… well, “unbelievable” doesn’t even seem to do it justice, does it? What previously took 72 games to do might now be done in a mere 37. There’s a lot of different ways to express just how much of a turn this Dodger season has taken from the days where it seemed like Don Mattingly was mere hours away from losing his job, but I’m not sure anything does it quite so effectively as that simple tweet.

If the Dodgers are going to make that happen, they’ll have to do it without Adrian Gonzalez, who gets a day off after playing in the last 72 games in a row. He was in the original starting lineup before being scratched, raising worries of an injury — remember, we lived through days of him being in the lineup before being removed in May — but he was reportedly going to get one of the weekend days off anyway, and the decision was made late to make it today.

That gives Scott Van Slyke his third start in a row at a third different position — he was in right field on Thursday and left field on Friday — and his second start of the season at first base, having started there as well on May 12.

As for the Cubs, Jeff Samardzija takes the hill, but they’ve made a roster move since last night, designating outfielder Julio Borbon for assignment. I joked on Twitter at the time that they must have really not liked the ninth-inning baserunning mistake he made yesterday as the Cubs were attempting to mount a comeback against Carlos Marmol, but it turns out not to be a joke at all: according to ESPN Chicago’s Bruce Levine, that’s exactly what happened. Be careful, Yasiel Puig.

Finally, there’s this — Ken Gurnick reports that Stephen Fife is likely to make tomorrow’s start, though he won’t be replacing Chris Capuano, who is of course starting today. Fife will just be pushing everyone back a day. I’m totally fine with the idea of getting everyone an extra day of rest in the dog days of August, especially with only four more days off for the rest of the season. Next week, that will mean that a decision will need to be made about which of the two gets bounced from the rotation, but the immediate ramification is that someone has to be removed from the 25 man roster. Sure, Chris Withrow has options remaining… but Carlos Marmol still exists. Keep an eye on that one.

The game chat for Cbssports's GameTracker gets pretty dirty near the ends of games.

really have to share closing duties when you win every game.

if Brian Wilson can prove useful I certainly wouldn't mind Jansen getting more rest

I dont understand why Jansen has to come up here..there should be exception to this closing agreement, like when playing the Cubs and 55 IP is a worrisome stat

disappointed they didn't score there, cuz now I can't make my "something something Kevin Gregg doesn't know why the dodgers dont want him" joke.
