Dodgers @ Cardinals August 6, 2013: No Really, It’s Been a Month Since a Road Loss

buschstadiumI’ve been trying not to talk too much about the Biogenesis situation here, for obvious reasons. That’s primarily because no Dodger got themselves caught up in it, but also because it’s just so phenomenally annoying from all angles. Yes, Alex Rodriguez is a stain upon the game, but no, I don’t at all agree with how he’s been treated. (Two cases in point of perhaps a million: A) funny how no one seemed to care that both starters in last night’s game, Andy Pettitte & Jose Quintana, each have drug problems in their past, and B) Rodriguez gets nearly four times as many games as Ryan Braun because… well, for no good reason, that’s why. Everyone involved in this is the worst, and that includes MLB, the fans, and the media.)

Anyway, I’m mentioning it now because Texas lost Nelson Cruz in this mess, and they now have a hole in their outfield that people who contact me seem to be absolutely convinced must be filled by Andre Ethier. “They have too many infielders! We have to many outfielders! To which I say: no.

Sure, at some point the Dodgers are going to have four healthy outfielders — maybe, conceivably, possibly. Hell, they might even have five someday, if you’re including Joc Pederson. But what they have right now is a fragile Carl Crawford, a Yasiel Puig so prone to injuring himself that when a Twitter hoax came up yesterday saying that he’d re-injured his wrist by running into a wall during batting practice we briefly bought it because that seems exactly like the sort of thing he’d do, and an Ethier who’s been surprisingly versatile and somewhat more productive at the place recently.

That doesn’t mean I want or expect that he’ll last the entire duration of his five-year extension, because he likely won’t. But he’s needed now, because Matt Kemp won’t be back for several more weeks, and you’re just an awkward Crawford or Puig day away from starting both Jerry Hairston and Skip Schumaker on a daily basis. We’ll get back to the idea of trading Ethier in the offseason, I’m sure, but now is not that time — and it’s not like the Rangers are going to be sending back Ian Kinsler or Jurickson Profar, anyway.

Ethier is back in center field tonight and hitting fifth, in what is a rare Don Mattingly lineup that’s identical (other than the pitcher) to what it was the night before. That means that we won’t get to judge Dee Gordon just yet, though I have no doubt that day is coming soon.

Oh, and Ted Lilly signed with the Giants. I fully expect him to pitch eight shutout innings on September 26 in Dodger Stadium, costing the Dodgers a chance at home-field advantage in the playoffs.

With all the negativity about Dee, he will inevitably start tomorrow and go 4-4 with 3 runs scored in a loss.

Ethier GIDP on a 3-0 pitch, Punto's bunt & Brandon League. This game was frustrating.

I am okay with losing to the Cardinals because they are a great team, but how they lost due to poor decisions is just gut wrenching.
