Mets @ Dodgers August 14, 2013: Capuan-o… or Five?

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150Last week, I wrote about Chris Capuano over at RotoGraphs, and I made a fun little graphic to illustrate the fact that he only ever gives up zero or five earned runs these days. Like, ever. At all. And then Capuano had to go out and face Tampa Bay and David Price in the first game of the Rays series — you remember, the one that ended on Fernando Rodney‘s walkoff throwing error — and gave up, wait for it, five earned runs. (I should point out here that earned runs are stupid, because he left inherited runners on which could have easily been charged to him had J.P. Howell not cleaned up the mess, but you know that already.)

So with that in mind, I guess I had better go ahead and update that image to include that last game and show you the results of his last nine starts:

There is really just no middle ground in there, is there? I mean, it’s basically a fun statistical quirk at this point — much like the fact that whenever he’s healthy for most of a season, he loses 12 games, though sadly he’s probably not going to drop six more to make it this year, because that implies the Dodgers as a team would lose six more games — but it’s now been just about two solid months of this.

But then, here I am letting math games overwhelm what is indeed the larger story, and that’s that Hanley Ramirez has rejoined the starting lineup for the first time since he injured his shoulder in Chicago ten days ago. Frankly, I don’t care if he goes 0-4 with three errors tonight (AKA “the Dee Gordon special”) and I don’t even care if the Dodgers finish off the sweep — I just want Ramirez to get through this big first test unscathed.

While Ramirez returns, Andre Ethier is out with internal bleeding (!) in his left calf. He’s still expected to play on Friday; Skip Schumaker mans center in his place, as opposed to having Yasiel Puig slide over this time. Tim Federowicz also starts, which is the tenth straight time he’ll catch Capuano. Maybe this is all his fault?

Also, remember Shawn Tolleson? He threw 11 pitches in his season debut back on April 12 in Arizona, walking both men he faced, then underwent back surgery and hasn’t been heard from since. He’s on the road back, and will be joining the Single-A Quakes on a rehab assignment. Assuming he stays healthy, it’s possible he’ll rejoin the big club in September once rosters expand. The 25-year-old Tolleson struck out 39 in 37.2 innings during his rookie season last year.

“I’m going to have to start, it hurts a lot” he admitted, according to New York Post. “I feel like I got kicked by a mule, and it hurts. … I can walk a little bit now. But at first I couldn’t walk at all. … When I lift my leg, I can feel my balls in my throat, but I thought I could get through it.”

eesh.

Fully expecting Withrow to be optioned, and honestly I don't think I'll be too angry about it.

Beard speculation is nice but honestly, I'm more eager to see Dominguez return. He can be 0.2 innings guy in a key righty-righty matchup where u need bats to miss.

I'm having a dense moment here... Vin calls Chavez Ravine the Magic Castle these days. Well you don't say? Magic Johnson, owner (2%). This team is indeed magical

Capuan-O or Five? Better make that "v" an "f"... Done plays Craps, y'all. Kershaw on pace to pitch most innings in his career. Greinke did break his collarbone, don't forget. Ryu, to him, is always pitching on short rest. It's why his velocity dips. Let's go with Fife and not tax our pen. Starter goes 5.0 innings, 4 runs. Bull pen is 7.0 innings, 0 runs.

Stupid useless sorry Orioles...we could have been up 10.5 games and have clinched by Labor Day

That happened (apparently)

It's okay, AZ can grab the wild card and the Dodgers can take the division by 12 games.

@PuigMode sinceJune3 I'm actually sorta happy the DBacks won those games. First, it will keep us from getting complacent. Second, the Dodgers just swept the Rays and the DBacks swept the O's. Fucking the AL East is always fun to do.

And this dude overthrew in my direction. Guess he thought I was the cutoff man

@slamjoe Yessir! I couldn't believe he nailed him. The runner seemed way too far ahead of the throw. I should've remembered that Puig is no mere mortal

I only went to replays when I got home for the different angles... But I was tracking that throw. NAILED the runner. I just lost it right then and there.
