Dodgers @ Phillies August 18, 2013: The House Money Lineup

citizensbankparkWhen you’ve won 10 in a row, and 42 of 50 (!), and the first two games of a three-game series against an awful team, and you have to head to Miami after this and don’t have a day off until a week from Thursday, well, you can certainly be forgiven for treating a getaway day in Philadelphia as a day off.

That’s basically what Don Mattingly is doing, because you won’t see Carl Crawford or Adrian Gonzalez or A.J. Ellis or Juan Uribe today, and while that’s maybe a bummer for Ricky Nolasco or any Dodger fans who happen to be attending the game, it makes all the sense in the world right now. After all, they have an 8.5 game lead in the division, and if there’s any time to get guys a rest, today is it. At this point, going merely 28-12 to get to 100 wins (which is more fun than anything, because it’s just a nice round number that doesn’t otherwise matter) would almost count as a disappointment, so they have some days to play with here.

If anything, I’m somewhat surprised that Jerry Hairston is playing first base with Scott Van Slyke out in left rather than vice-versa, but I suppose it’s not something that really matters all that much either way.

Still, if the Dodgers struggle today against Cole Hamels — and please don’t be fooled by that 5-13 record, because he’s still been good this year and has a 47/8 K/BB in his last eight starts — I can’t wait to hear complaints from fans that Mattingly “threw this one away”. You’d think that going on a run that hasn’t been matched in decades would be enough to get some leeway, but then you probably don’t get the same Tweets I do.

The Phillies aren’t exactly throwing out what passes for their A-game lineup either, not with Michael Martinez at shortstop and Kevin Frandsen at first base atop the lineup. No news yet on Brian Wilson, by the way, though there’s still two hours until game time. If he doesn’t get activated before the first pitch, perhaps whomever he’s replacing will be getting on a different plane out of Philadelphia this afternoon.

Today’s game will be on Prime Ticket, but is also a TBS national broadcast, for those in the appropriate viewing areas.

You got it, the worst field general in MLB threw this one out the window. What is with his devotion to League? it's like League is his son-in law or something, with nothing to offer at all! And it's quite apparent nobody is breathing down Hanley's neck for play time. He gets increasingly lazy each game. It's as if he and Puig are having some sort of "Carribean Casual Contest" to see who can look more like their mental ( and physical ) errors don't really matter. Lets face it, with Mattingly asleep, and Wallach as 3rd base statue, these guys are going to win strictly on deep talent, because strategy and leadership are lacking closest to the field.I could go on, but....

House money game people, don't freak out. I'd rather see them lose this game than say, a game against the D-backs or in the playoffs.

still have some time left before the waiver deadline, we could unload some payroll and get some prospects. At least gain something out of this miserable season.

I love being able to do nothing but laugh at player silliness after a lost while we maintain a strong position in FIRST PLACE

Maybe Uribe should switch his fielder's glove with boxing gloves tonight.

Besides Hanley Bobblehands, we need Uribe Jazz Hands.

Also Hanley's hitting .356/.405/.635 so please nobody hurl obscenities at him unless they're sarcastic.

Giants lost, if it makes anybody feel better.

It does make me feel better. I don't know why, it just does.

do you think mattingly put in league as kind of a preparation for the playoffs?

perfect ball to get out of it too

League's performance in 9th: weak grounder to short, line drive to OF, IBB, weak grounder to short. Hanley's performance in 9th: terrible throw to first on a routine play, kicked grounder on a potential GIDP that would have ended the inning.

FUCK YOU LEAGUE

@wetrrr1 You are right about one thing, baseball teams win because of the talent on the field, not the mental acuity of the manager

@brincon I don't understand that either, but if Hanley made the play, Mattingly would have done the "right" thing.

@BingeSquinger I agree, he should have put shu in for hanley moved Punto to short and bring in gonzo, that would have really went over well, taking you best offensive player out of the game, and wasting a barrel of crude oil to lubricate gonzo's knees.

systemguy

@BingeSquinger so does this mean that he's not worried about puid making mistakes in the playoffs?

slamjoe

Do we have a lights-out defensive SS in the lineup? No bat necessary.. Maybe a double switch with 2-run lead in a late inning ballgame in October...

BingeSquinger

@systemguy @BingeSquinger His response would probably be something along the lines of Puig got us to the playoffs playing how he did you cant change that blah blah blah

@TellMyWifeISaidHello @BingeSquinger thats not Mattingly's weakness, he doesn't know not to go to League yet??  He doesn't put an end to the rookies baserunning and lack of sense to throw to a cut off man?? those are things a MANAGER does. He also tells his 3rd base coach to wake up and direct the runners!!  Jeez, Mattingly makes terrible choices (or lack there of )  He is lucky to be so deep in talent or he would be long gone
