Report: Sigh

That completely SEO-unfriendly headline is in response to this…

So here we are, talking about a terrible pitcher for some reason. Volquez was released by the Padres a few days ago, and that’s a team that gave 11 starts to Clayton Richard (7.01 ERA / 6.53 FIP) and three more to someone called Burch Smith (11.37 ERA / 7.45 FIP). The Padres arguably have the worst starting rotation in baseball — so bad, that when Jason Marquis got hurt, it actually qualified as a problem — and even they said “you know what? Why don’t you just hit the road,” because when you get bounced after just 0.2 inning like he did against the Cubs five days ago, that’s not great.

That’s how bad he’s been, and that’s what happens when you’re mixing your usual control problems with a decreased ability to miss bats. Volquez’ swinging-strike percentage is down to 8.6%, the worst it’s been for him since back in 2007 with Texas. His velocity is down below 93 for the first time in his career, and he’s only really had one season in his career (2008) where he’s been both healthy and good, and WHY AM I ANALYZING EDINSON VOLQUEZ LIKE HE’S ANYTHING BUT AWFUL.

Unfortunately, the minor league season ends in less than a week, so everyone squawking about “why isn’t it a minor league deal like with Jonathan Sanchez” is a bit off base. What this says to me is a whole lot more about how the team views the struggling Chris Capuano and the uncertain Stephen Fife than it does anything else, because if you’re willing to take a chance on a guy like this and put him right on the roster, it means that you are incredibly unhappy with what you have.

So really, the only thing keeping me sane here is that this almost certainly doesn’t matter. Capuano is terrible, and Fife can’t be counted on, and Volquez is terrible too, probably moreso than any of them. With 29 games left, the Dodgers have a nine game lead, and so the fifth starter gets, what, five starts, at most? Maybe? Start Capuano, start Volquez, call up Matt Magill or Zach Lee or even Sanchez… it almost certainly doesn’t matter. That’s what I’m telling myself, anyway.

"#Padres pay all but pro-rated min of his $5.725M."

What does that mean? There's "pro-rated" and then there's "pro-rated minimum." Does that mean the Dodgers are only on the hook for the remainder of the veteran's minimum?

I guess that is the difference between cheap and dirt cheap.

Oh well, you get what you pay for.

Fife - or if his shoulder gives out, Sanchez, or one of the kids, or some other stiff who's down in the minors - Volquez just seems completely unnecessary.

YHIHF, Mike says call up Lee

The speculation is that Volquez will be used as a sixth starter down the stretch to preserve everybody's innings for the postseason. All of a sudden, I'm not as sad anymore.

Dodgers need to take 1 out of the next 3 against the Reds when they go there next week to make sure we have HFA against the NL central in case of a tie

I would have preferred that the Gnats or Dbags sign Vólquez, but if they're just looking for someone to throw a couple spot starts in September, it's not that big a deal as long as it gets the playoff rotation a little extra rest. Presumably they could have done the same thing with Jonathan Sánchez, though, and get just as many if not more walks (not that I'm advocating that).

I'd like to think that the Dodgers have scouts and advisors working for Colletti who apparently see some value in getting Volquez, and using him to close out the season over Capuano.

As much as I hate to say it, this is the GM who brought us Nolasco and Ramirez, so for me, the jury is out until we see him pitch a few games.

OMG HECK YES my university f'ed up when reading my transcript and it turns out I don't have to take some classes due to AP credit.  My 8am MWF class is now gone so I can stay up and watch West Coast Dodger games those nights and still get a decent night's sleep

He may have said that, but Lee didn't seem to be his first choice.

They did play for like 24 days in a row or something, it is easy to forget that they don't actually play every day.

Are you Buster Olney?

Has a good case for Cy either way, especially since Felix blew up yesterday.

@Mike Petriello If Kershaw would have gotten 6 runs of support a game he could be 26-0 right now. Considering the Dodgers have only given up 6 or more runs in 2 games he has started this year and the more is a time they gave up 7.

but does he play the game the right way?

Seems like a lot of misses, but when he hit, he hit really big.

@moneynow27  I am curious how Ned's record on hits and misses compares to other GMs. You're right that Ned brought us Hanley and Ricky, but he also brought us the 2011 team......

@KMT59 @Dang88 There were reports yesterday of an umpire telling Mark Ellis that they would call it that way if he did it again and after he did do it he sat. Personally Don took a big step forward with me by not saying anything about it in his press conference and how shocked he was when he was told that Ricky Nolasco had said something. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Nolasco got called in for talking to after the press was gone either!

Now I am going to combine two sentences in one, however this is going to limit the amount of points I can share.

I wonder if his attitude gets bad enough, if they are going to take BWilson off of his meds, and sic him on Volquez.

Does that mean that a Canadian team is better than us on the road?
