Dodgers @ Reds September 8, 2013: Clayton Kershaw on National Television

greatamericanballparkThe Dodgers head into tonight’s finale in Cincinnati on a three-game losing streak, yet since Atlanta lost to the Phillies earlier today, they have yet another chance to pull within one game of the best record in the National League. If San Francisco can manage to topple Arizona (tied at two in the eighth at the time of this writing), the Dodgers will get back up to an 11.5 game lead in a long-done NL West.

That’s the beauty of the absolute domination we’ve seen over the last few months, because you can go on a bit of a skid in September — if you can even call it that, because it includes some half-effort games in Colorado and Chris Capuano lasting only 1.2 innings before getting hurt — and have it not really matter. When you don’t lose for three solid months, you can lose a few times in a week. It happens, and it’s not the worst thing in the world.

Now that being said, three losses is a bad week, and four is something that begins to generate concern — valid or not — especially when you’ve got Clayton Kershaw going on the national broadcast tonight. Speaking of being so great that any slight speed bump generates notice, you’ll hear a lot about Kershaw “not being great lately” tonight, but because he’s the best pitcher on the planet, his last three games have included 19 strikeouts and six earned runs in 18.2 innings.

In the meantime, Juan Uribe hits fifth tonight, ahead of Andre Ethier against the right-handed Homer Bailey, and there’s no secret why: Ethier has zero hits in 18 career plate appearances against the Cincinnati starter. I’m generally against placing much importance on batter-vs-pitcher stats… but that’s pretty bad, isn’t it?

Finally, some injury news: Hyun-jin Ryu threw a rare bullpen session and was pronounced healthy, reports Bill Plunkett, and should start on Wednesday. Matt Kemp, who was supposedly “out indefinitely,” took 15 simulated place appearances yesterday and apparently now could be ready to play in ten days, reports David Vassegh, though you’ll forgive me if I wait to see that one before I believe it.

Donnie's not going to change his strategy in the playoffs. If its a road game, he's going to wait until there's a save situation to use Kenley.  Its completely asinine.

Have The Dodgers just set the NL Central into post season mini chaos?  I know there's 21 games left in the season, but a 3-way tie for the Central division (after 162) would leave PIT, CIN & STL all at a disadvantage taking 2 extra days in tie breaker games just to determine who goes where for the playoffs.

Pirates, Dodgers, and Braves are all in a slump right now. I'm not worried but I would really like to see some more offense in this next series.

Basically if the Dodgers finish behind the Cards or Braves, then they are going to be opening in STL or ATL

At least each game was 1 run? I hate belli, sorry

I want a rematch in the postseason. The Reds are a second wild card team at best, and Dusty Baker is good at losing playoffs.

So lets we the Dodgers got swept by a wild card team even with their best two pitchers, hmmm. .... Oh no reason to panic, is that the new meme, foley. Damn right panic. The Dodgers offense is just bad, and Kersh has not been Kersh for three starts in a row.

Man I love this team still, something about seeing Hanley play good throwing to Agon on a Kershaw batted ball feels watching a straight up All-Star team. Then you know you have Puig / Kemp etc. possibly mixed in there. They look ready to have an epic series vs the Reds sometime next month.

Two tie games late, and no Kenley Jansen.Better hope Don just wanted extended rest for Kenley, but watch Jansen pitch 3 straight 3-run games this week

Our bullpen has let us down in the late innings lately and offense has let us down most innings

The offense has been bad for past few series. Something is wrong, I don't know what. Are the guys just not motivated, don't care, not focused ..... Whatever it is these guys need to get their heads back in the game because right now they look like crap

I hate Dodgers offense for not getting the extra run

Well, it's not as though Greinke, nor Kershaw could do any more other than put up zeros.

I blame Michael Young.

Also, looks like we could use Matt Kemp.

@BIah @TellMyWifeISaidHello I'm concern with the offense as they were in a hitter's ballpark and couldn't do anything except for Hanley.

We really need to bring more arms up in the pen.  I know that they don't want to start the clocks on Onelki and Yimi, but we really need arms up now.
