Giants @ Dodgers September 12, 2013: Remember the Giants?

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150

You know what’s great? September baseball should be meaningful, and it should especially be so when the Dodgers are playing the Giants. Sure, you can talk about the Diamondbacks and Rockies and Padres, and they all have their mildly interesting histories and recent feuds with the Dodgers, but they’re not the Giants. They’re not the longtime rivals who moved from the East Coast so many decades ago, and they’re especially not the team who has somehow managed to win two titles in the last three seasons.

So yeah, a series against the Giants in September should be important… and it’s not, for all the right reasons. It’s mostly because the Dodgers have had this division wrapped up for weeks, but it’s also because the Giants have taken a total nosedive. When these two teams last met, back in the first week of July, the series ended with the Dodgers still under .500 and just two games ahead of the Giants.

Now they meet again, and the Giants are in last place, having actually tried to use Jeff Francoeur with a straight face. It’s wonderful, really, that the main goal for the traditional biggest rivals is just “uh, hey guys, try not to get yourselves hurt out there.” They can’t even play spoiler at this point; the season is over.

If that sounds like me taking needless glee at the misfortunes of others, well, guilty as charged, but just remember what it felt like to watch Hunter Pence and Ryan Vogelsong and Pablo Sandoval and yes, Juan Uribe and Brian Wilson raise the flags over the last few years.

So sure, as the Dodgers go out and send Zack Greinke against Matt Cain tonight, it’d be great if they knock one more game off that magic number. Or not, you know, because it barely even matters that the Giants are in town in September — and that’s a great thing.

But in the same breath, don’t also forget to enjoy what we’ve been lucky enough to witness this season, because the Giants are rolling out the same group (though not in the same order, and in front of Cain instead of Barry Zito) that they did in Game 1 of the World Series last year. It can all fall apart so quickly.

Was there drama last night? I mean other than winning in the 10th with a walk-off single, and Wilson pitching at his old team?

Hey deBlue,

I just wanted to let you know that we've pushed the fix for the hyperlink issue live to production and, though old links will not correct, all new links moving forward will link our and behave as expected.

Thanks again for your patience, and have a great upcoming weekend!

@Sad Panda (Super Future) I don't have any right now, but I'll share with the night crew one of these nights. It's about 3.5" at its majestic peak. This lady today told me I looked very intimidating until we started chatting

@deblue @Hoze I dont know actually since I didnt catch the game live, and I know that the rivalry could get both teams extra competitive but something must have happened for Gonzo to act they he did

Hehe well in that case I hope they put out a real lineup so you can see some decent players like Puig Ethier Ramirez or Gonzalez. Hopefully it's not one of those rest games where you see Michael young cleanup with Hairston leading off.
