Giants @ Dodgers September 14, 2013: Get On Board the Chili Buss

dodger_stadium_2013_150x150Earlier today in the comments of my discussion about Andre Ethier and Coors Field, someone asked me why the Dodgers weren’t taking advantage of the expanded September rosters to have more outfielders, since it seemed they had no problem carrying 78 infielders.

Today, they fixed that problem and then some, calling up Alex Castellanos and — surprisingly — Chili Buss. We know Castellanos, but Buss is a new name, and he’ll be making his big league debut should he actually ever get into a game. (It’s not a given; we still haven’t seen Drew Butera yet, have we?) Suddenly the Dodgers have absolutely no problem staffing the outfield depth chart, with the duo joining Ethier, Yasiel Puig, Carl Crawford, Scott Van Slyke, Skip Schumaker, Jerry Hairston, and perhaps Matt Kemp next week.

Buss turns 27 in December and was selected in the eighth round in 2008 out of USC, and he just completed his first year at Triple-A after six years in the organization, so he’s not exactly a top-level prospect. Still, he did win the team MVP award and was the lone Isotopes to go to the PCL All-Star Game, so it’s a nice reward for a season that had 17 homers, 21 steals, and a .303/.363/.525 line. (As you’d expect, massive ABQ warning here, because he hit .249/.295/.419 on the road, so, yeah.)

Buss has some speed, stealing 110 bases over the last five years, and can play all three outfield spots, so he’ll be a nice depth piece to have for the next few weeks — especially since Puig is apparently now a preferable choice in center over Schumaker. And yes, he was named after Chili Davis.

At the moment, we haven’t heard how he’ll be added to the 40-man roster, though my guess is that Jose Dominguez will simply be shifted to the 60-day disabled list, since he’s only about eight days short of that timespan anyway and isn’t likely to return this year.

Ethier, of course, is likely to be out for the next few days with his ankle injury — “similar to bone spurs,” reports David Vassegh — as is Hanley Ramirez, so the team could use the reinforcements.

Is there any doubt Grant Balfour won't be a DBack next year?

we start in Australia, that would be really cool to see

So today's my anniversary, which means no recap and that I'll only be able to watch the first 2-3 innings. Too bad; this should be a hilarious game.

Only issue with this lineup is I really really wanted to see a Castle-Buss-SVS outfield

I'll take MSTI responsibility for Chili Buss.  Just you wait, boys & girls.  A 28-yr old phenom arrives.

"Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta is “likely going to be someone’s third baseman” next season, one Detroit teammate said."

if this is true, sign him

I'm buying a TV today. Now at least I'll be able to watch (some) playoff baseball. Unsure if my current channel package includes TBS.

@Mike Petriello RECAP:  Chili Buss hits for the cycle leading the Isotopes, ahem Dodgers to a 20-0 romp over the last place Gnats.  There.  Have a happy anniversary.

@Lobo Come on, you could see house money today coming from a mile away.

Yeah I'm sure the principal is agreed on. They are just arguing over his options/ how long he can spend in the minors/ opt out clauses / arbitration eligible/ etc.

@DBrim TBS is pretty much a standard cable channel.  I'd be surprised if its not in your basic package

@DBrim @Lobo This isn't so much an "Oh My God why is Donnie doing this?" as much as it is an "Oh My God I'm not quite sure whether or not this is the best thing ever"

@NeDieterich @DBrim My basic package (apparently) doesn't have ESPN. No clue. We'll find out eventually.

@Chavez Ravine Fiend I think they know they need pitching, Matt Garza definitely sounds like an Angel type player

5/90 is going to be funny to see for a Chad Billingsley type pitcher

@NeDieterich Very basic cable + internet was the same price as just internet, so...
