Dodgers @ Giants Sept. 26, 2013: The End of Volquez, Or Just the Beginning?

attparkI think we all know that Ricky Nolasco was never as good as he looked over his first two months as a Dodger, and we should hopefully know that he’s not really as awful as he’s been for his last three starts. That’s probably part of the never-ending infuriating experience that is Nolasco, though not usually to such extremes.

Still, I think that a bit of the “hey, maybe Edinson Volquez should start a potential Game 4 of the NLDS ahead of Nolasco!” talk that’s floating around is just a bit much. Volquez has been better than we expected when he arrived in August — which is to say, not a total trashcan fire — limiting walks until issuing four free passes last time out, though not being able to avoid the longball in any of his starts.

If so, and if he doesn’t beat out Carlos Marmol and Brandon League — or if the Dodgers take just 10 pitchers, which is unlikely, but possible — then this might be the last we see of Volquez in Dodger blue, since they have no obligation to him past this year. I imagine some of us may have different opinions about that possibility, but the simple fact that we’re not all rising up in unison to drop him into the middle of the Pacific is probably a success in itself.

Otherwise, yes, no Andre Ethier yet again, and it now sounds (via Tony Jackson) like we might not see him again for the rest of the regular season — though apparently that doesn’t completely rule him out for the NLDS. That sets up something of an interesting conversation, I think. If you do have 10 set pitchers, is it worth taking an 11th who you don’t really want to ever use — like a Volquez or a Marmol — or do you take a guy who might be available only to pinch hit? We’ll have three days after the season and before the playoffs to think about it.

So, Barves get the Wild Card winner and Dodgers get the Cards?

good thing he labeled it to "Dodger Nation" otherwise I'd have no idea who this tweet was supposed to be for

@ JohnM @DBrim this is awful, because Juan Uribe is making more than the entire Astros' team, yet has the same WAR.

We should have just traded Uribe for the entire astros team when we had the chance.
