Tony Gwynn, Matt Wallach Among Dodger Minor League Free Agents

tonygwynn_number1It’s that time of the year where it’s technically the offseason — free agents are able to sign as of today — but it’s not, really, because no one big ever signs this quickly. That means that anything, even otherwise unimportant minor league minutiae, counts as news. Today, “minor league free agents” fall under that category.

The wonderful Matt Eddy of Baseball America explains the rules…:

Each of these players, plus 544 others, are no longer bound to their organization by contract renewals—the Uniform Player Contract grants six renewal years—and have no successor contract in place for 2014.

…and shares with us the Dodgers list:

RHP: Juan Abreu* (AAA), Angel Castro (AAA), Kyle Cofield (AAA), Blake Johnson (AAA), Anthony Ortega (AAA), Matt Palmer (AAA), Mario Santiago (AAA), Daniel Tamares (Lo A), Luis Vasquez (AAA), Sean White (AAA)
LHP: Kelvin De La Cruz (AAA), Thomas Melgarejo (AA), Jonathan Sanchez (AAA)
C: Eliezer Alfonzo (AAA), Damaso Espino (AAA), J.R. Towles (AAA), Matt Wallach (AA)
1B: Sean Burroughs (AAA)
2B: Rafael Ynoa (AA)
3B: Brian Barden (AAA), Pedro Guerrero (AA), Ryan Mount (AA)
OF: Matt Angle (AAA), Tony Gwynn Jr. (AAA), Jeremy Moore (AAA)

Not a lot of surprises or anyone we’ll miss, of course. Eyeballing this, no one here ever played in the bigs for the Dodgers other than Gwynn, who didn’t appear this year, though several of these guys have had experience in the big leagues before. Remember when we all liked Moore last spring? Or how Ynoa briefly garnered some buzz after the Arizona Fall League? Or how worried we were when Sanchez signed? Some of these guys may return, but most won’t, to be replaced by a slew of other equally forgettable names to fill out rosters.

As you can see, it takes a bite out of the depth chart, though that will get filled in soon enough by signings and promotions.

Current job not helping its cause by scheduling a meeting on why things are late (despite being entirely out of my control) at 8AM, which is almost an hour before when I normally come in.

HEY guys. u know how they say that in baseball there is no such thing as a player being hot? Do you guys think there is no such thing as being hot in basketball?

Haaaaaa, it got rescheduled, but I couldn't find out until I got in.

@TheReggieHurley Interestingly, a recent study concluded no for basketball as well.  Bball players, however, believe they're hot so the keep shooting (and sometimes while taking increasingly poor shots), believing that they're in the zone...

I actually did enjoy it. No sarcasm. They brought in a signature expert and she explained how she did her work.

Judges seem to have a very low tolerance for theatrics and people not obeying the code of conduct ina court room, whether it is a shady lawyers or ley people/defendents

@EephusBlue @steelmohawk I got called in for the jury on the case where the Ramones manager got killed. I said I couldn't do it because I liked punk rock too much.

@steelmohawk Another dude I know got called in to serve on an sex assault case.  During jury selection, the defendant, after being stone silent the whole time, suddenly shouted out "What's the point of child porn? If you aren't supposed to look, then why do they make it?!?".  He said the entire court room went dead silent and everyone looked at him with wide eyes in shock.  Except the judge who was extremely pissed off.

the murder trial for the kid who murdered my roommate/best-friend lasted almost a month.  the extra juror they randomly let go had 6 or 7 note books of notes, I felt bad for him

@steelmohawk I am curious but in no hurry to get into one.

Honestly I dont know how I would feel if it were a murder trial. A friend of mine got called for one once.

@Good Clubhouse Cat @Lobo @^<<**(chị yêu)**>>^ Better than some people I know.  Most of my mom's side of the family get sick multiple times a year, particularly the kids.  My guess is because they're rather germaphobic so the kids haven't been exposed to anything to build up their immune system (my siblings and I were let loose and we're by far the healthiest in the family)

@^<<**(chị yêu)**>>^ My immune system kicks ass.  I've been sick twice since the 1st grade.  A few years back my whole family got swine flu except me

any time you take broad spectrum antibiotics the risk for you personally is only something such as c-diff colonic superinfections. the risk of breeding antibiotic resistant organisms is a long term public health problem that is the biggest reason for concern with its overuse

this is a much different case, if you have atypical bacterial sinus infxns it is perfectly acceptable and actually good practice
