Here’s Who Isn’t Playing Third Base Next Year

ramirez_nlcs_game1

Ned Colletti dropped some truth about the Dodger infield today, and a few of the usuals collected his comments. I assume by this point I don’t need to add the caveat that there’s generally an 80% chance of what a GM says publicly is less than truthful.

1) Hanley Ramirez is not under consideration for third base. That’s not a terribly big surprise, as much as many of us would like him to. It’s not like there’s another internal option for shortstop, and Stephen Drew (who would cost a pick) is the best of a poor free agent market. Ramirez reportedly would be open to a discussion, but that conversation hasn’t happened since he came to Los Angeles.

2) Neither is Alexander Guerrero. He’s “still being considered” for starting second baseman, but that’s dependent on winter ball playing time.

So we know who isn’t playing third. Who is? My money is still on Juan Uribe, especially if recent reports indicating he’s come off a three-year request are accurate. We’ll know soon; Uribe is likely to get signed one way or another this week.

I could be full of shit, wait, let me rephrase that. I'm not reading anything about the Uribe/Puig connection. Seems to me there was a big time bromance between the latinos on the team, and wouldn't it be a good idea to keep Uribe around as a mentor to young Puig? And who's to say Puig can't light another fire under Papi?

Proof that baseball is a weird game.  We're all praying for the return of Uribe, aren't we?  Unthinkable a year ago.  The scary thing is it'll probably be for a higher annual value than the last contract.

The market is pretty thin out there, though.  Solid D and erratic hitting will actually cost you at least $7 mil a year these days.

This just in, GMs get drunk and  talk.

Teams are just trying to play hardball. They want the Dodgers to have to eat salary.

do you really think they have orthopedic surgeons reviewing Matt Kemp's medical file - and able to have proper turnaround of evaluation of condition in this short amount of time?

Man, you guys were pretty riled on that "if Kemp was clean" comment.  I mean, I bet we all think he was, especially since he seem so irked about Braun... but am I the only one who generally holds out some percentage of chance for PEDs on just about ANY player not named Punto?  I mean seriously, would you all be shocked, shocked I tell you!! if it turned out Puig was taking something?  Or that Ethier used in the past, and that's why his power numbers are freee....  freee fallinnnggg the last couple years?

Eh, the point REALLY was to communicate how rare those numbers are now that PEDs aren't in widespread use, and thus how awesome Kemp is.  I felt is dishonest to say "Since Kemp wasn't using, blah blah," because honestly, how would I know that?

you could have made the exact same point you were making without throwing in your "if he was clean" bit

No, was not the intent.  If it came across that was, unintentional.

Yes. Because whenever you don't make accusations of steroids on this board, everybody will accuse you of being wrong.

Right.

I could have, then someone could have rightly said, "How do YOU know he wasn't using?"
